Background: This workshop will bring together authors of the Third National Climate Assessment (NCA3) Report, developers of tools supporting the NCA, and communication, education, and outreach experts within and outside of the Federal government, including USGCRP agencies and members of NCAnet.
Workshop attendees may find the following resources useful ahead of and during the workshop:
Overarching Goal: Build capacity to engage a variety of assessment users in learning and conversation about climate change science and the impacts of climate change on the United States, using the Third NCA Report as a jumping off point for such conversations. The engagement activities should support the following objectives:
Outcomes: Participants in the workshop will create frameworks for and plan implementation of engagement activities related to the release of the Third NCA Report (anticipated Spring 2014). Ideally, these frameworks will be posted on the NCAnet website in the NCAnet Partners Toolkit as a resource for all NCAnet partners planning engagement activities related to NCA3. The activities themselves will be funded and implemented using a variety of mechanisms, including by federal agencies, NCAnet partner organizations, and other organizations with an interest in the National Climate Assessment. In addition to serve as a mechanism for participants to plan activities that will take place once the NCA launches in spring 2014, the workshop will also provide participants with the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills related to the NCA and construct a community of practice around using the NCA in outreach and education.
Workshop Format: Plenary sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss the overarching roll-out and sustained engagement strategy for the Third NCA Report, introduce major new tools being developed in support of the NCA (e.g., NASA visualizations, Global Change Information System), and encourage teams to share progress on their planning and collaborate with each other on developing engagement activities. The workshop will make use of several small group sessions, during which teams will focus on designing and creating implementation plans for specific activities related to the release of the Third NCA Report.
Although most of the small group activities centering on creating frameworks for and planning implementation of engagement activities will take place during the two days of the workshop, we anticipate that members of the small groups may begin discussions ahead of the workshop, and that some work of the groups - including finalizing frameworks and implementation plans - may extend beyond the end of the workshop. More broadly, the workshop outcomes will contribute to the ongoing work of NCAnet partners and of the network itself.
For more information on the workshop, please see the detailed agenda.
Application for Attendance: Due to space constraints, participation in this workshop is by invitation only. Applications were due on January 10, 2014 and all slots for the workshop have been filled.
We also have a small number of travel stipends available for people who would like to attend the workshop but are not otherwise able to travel. These funds will be used to support participants who represent diverse disciplinary perspectives and organizations interested in engaging potential audiences and users of the National Climate Assessment.
